WHAT TO DO

One of the most popular spectator sports in Thailand is the martial art of Muay Thai. Exciting enough on TV - the furious punches, crushing elbow strikes, lethal kicks and artful feints are even more exciting when seen live.

If you don’t mind the violence, a Thai boxing match is worth attending for the pure spectacle and the wild musical accompaniment, the ceremonial beginning of each match, and the frenzied betting. Saphan Hin Stadium in Phuket City has regular matches.

Horse riding

There are two riding clubs in Phuket, both offering tours and instruction for people of all ages and abilities.

Phuket Bang Tao Riding Club, 394 Moo 1, Bangtao Beach, at the entrance to Laguna Resorts. Fee from 660 Baht per hour.

Phuket Riding Club, 95 Viset Rd, Rawai. Fee between 300 Baht and 500 Baht an hour, depending on whether instruction is required. Open daily from 7am-6.30pm.

Go kart

Bring out your inner Michael Schumacher with a spin around the 600m track of Patong Go-Kart Speedway, 118/5 Vichitsongkram Rd, Kathu - at the base of Patong Hill.

Bungy jump

There are two places in Phuket where you can hurl yourself from great heights and live to tell your friends about it, with the help of a bungee cord: Jungle Bungy Jump in Kathu District promises to give you "The best fun you can have with your pants on!" - a jump from 50m tower over water.

World Bungy Patong, meanwhile, claims to be Southern Thailand's highest bungy. Located on Soi Kepsap, 2 Sai Namyen Rd, Patong Beach.

Bowling is a popular pastime in Phuket, and there are no less than 5 bowling alleys on the island, with 2-3 more planned to open soon.

Patong: Ocean Plaza Bowling, Bangla Rd;
Rock & Bowl, Sai Nam Yen Rd.

Phuket City: CS Bowl, Big C Supercenter;
Ocean Bowling, Ocean Shopping Mall;
Pearl Bowling Lanes, intersection of Montri and Phang-nga roads.

Elephant Trekking

Thailand's deforestation has not been kind to its famous beast, and the elephant population is now at a critically low level. Formerly used to fell logs and battle on the front lines in times of war, the Thai elephant is still expected to "earn its keep" to survive. The tourism trade is a way to protect the lives of the elephants while providing the means to satisfy their enormous appetites.

Riding the back of an elephant and seeing the grace, dexterity and "personality" of the giant beast up close is an experience that is not soon forgotten. Just be sure to use only the services of an operation that looks after the health and wellbeing of its animals, as there are some in Phuket that clearly fail to properly care for their elephants.

Cooking

The exotic flavours of Thai cuisine have captured the attention of food lovers throughout the world, and there's no better way to learn the art of Thai cooking than with some local chefs. Many classes also offer the chance to shop for all the fresh ingredients in local markets.

Exploring the interior with an all-terrain vehicle is a fun and exciting way to see some of the hidden gems of the island - rubber plantations, forests, lakes and lovely beaches. A quieter alternative is to explore by bicycle, on a tour that takes you through local villages and nature sites alike.

Mini Golf

Fire-breathing dragons, an active volcano, T-Rex and Brontosaurus replicas and eerie jungle sounds make for an exciting round of mini-golf! Dino Park Mini Golf is great fun for the whole family. The Jurassic-themed restaurant and bar are perfect for a post-game drink or meal. Watch out for the hungry elephant.
